Migrant Respite at FMW, Wednesday, January 11 all day – volunteers needed
Twice a month, FMW opens its doors to migrants arriving by bus from Texas.  Volunteers from FMW and area faith and mutual aid organizations provide clothing, a hot meal, the travellers’ their first warm welcome. and help begin their lives as our neighbors.  Buses do not arrive in DC every day, and we only know a day in advance whether respite is a “go”–but we need to have plans in place.  For more info and to volunteer, contact Jim Bell, phone: (240) 413-1229 email: KelleyBell21@comcast.net

BYM Faith & Practice Revision–Request for Feedback
Baltimore Yearly Meeting is requesting feedback on these two draft sections of the new Faith & Practice. FMW’s Ministry and Worship Committee requests all FMW Committees to devote 30 minutes in December or January to discussing these revisions. FMW’s Committee on Peace and Social Concerns is excited to host this visit and conversation with Julie Tayac Yates, matriarch of the Piscataway Nation.  Julie will be speaking with FMW’s First Day School children in the morning, then joining us at 12:30 for a more adult conversation about growing up Piscataway, what it means to be Native American and what solidarity and Right Relationship with our regions native peoples might look like in DC and Maryland.

This film tells the little-known story of how the two national antiwar demonstrations in the fall of 1969 helped prevent the Nixon administration from launching a major escalation of the Vietnam War, including the possible use of nuclear weapons. The film shows that protests matter, even if the participants don’t realize it at the time. FWC is 150 acres of trails and wilderness on the western slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Great place to hike and camp and escape the DC grind! (There is also a China Folk House from Tibet, rebuilt by Sidwell Friends School.

Rabbi Berner offers a fresh experiential approach to personal contemplation, based on a Christian method of reading Scripture—lectio divina. Rabbi Berner’s adaptation, kriat ha-kodesh (reading the sacred), is welcoming and accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Rabbi Berner explains rabbinic perspectives that have illuminated the stories in Genesis and suggests questions for contemplation and meditation, interspersed with chants  and silence. Rabbi Berner offers a fresh experiential approach to personal contemplation, based on a Christian method of reading Scripture—lectio divina. Rabbi Berner’s adaptation, kriat ha-kodesh (reading the sacred), is welcoming and accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Rabbi Berner explains rabbinic perspectives that have illuminated the stories in Genesis and suggests questions for contemplation and meditation, interspersed with chants  and silence. FMW will be offering childcare for 0 through 3 years starting the 2nd Sunday in September.  Childcare will be available every Sunday during Meeting for Worship, approximately 10:30-11:30 am. For any questions, please contact Julie Johnson, clerk of RE, at juliejenj@gmail.com.

 

Still seeking childcare staff

Our childcare team is still seeking two additional staff members to round out the childcare team. This is a part-time, paid position. Staff would sign up for specific Sundays and help provide coverage when needed. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Katorra Enoch Longshore at katorrael@cdacouncil.org.

Honey!! – Freshly Harvested from FMW’s Green Roof Hives


On Sunday, June 6 FMW’s First Day School joined beekeeper team to harvest, extract and bottle over 120 lbs of honey from the hives on FMW’s green roof.  50+ bottles of various sizes are available through FMW’s Administrative Secretary.  Suggested donation: $10-$30 (Hyper-local honey goes for about $1.25 an ounce.)  Contact Admin@QuakersDC.org to make arrangements.
